Getting Organic in a CSA

Is it cheaper than shopping organic stores? What does it buy me? And, why do I care about organic? For me, step by step, I am replacing processed and treated foods to limit my allergic reactions to the preservatives. The summer and fall Sandy Spring CSA was a large contributor to that switch. For 33 weeks, between the summer and fall CSAs, I ate almost 100% organic vegetables and IPM or organic fruit. Sandy Spring, the largest CSA delivering to Howard County at the Conservancy and in West Columbia off Cedar Lane on Thursdays, is my source for organic veggies.

Continuing into a winter CSA helped, but the winter Zahradka Farm CSA is not certified organic. They are the only year round CSA in the area. They sell at Glenwood Market. A quote from their web site.

“Our farming practices are modeled after the Certified Organic guidelines for Md. as often as possible. If we are having problems with our crop we resort to IPM (Integrated Pest Management), and we are always open about what is going on with our farm to our customers.”

I also buy at our farmer’s markets in the county. Breezy Willow Farm is certified organic. It is the only one at the farmer’s market that is certified so far. They also offer a CSA for those who want a regular organic source of veggies, bread and eggs. I buy what I need from them weekly to supplement my CSA delivery, particularly their homemade breads and their eggs. If my Thursday delivery doesn’t include something I need, I turn to Breezy Willow as my first source. I created a tag, value of CSA, that will track what I get weekly in my organic CSA, and compare it to the cost of buying organic veggies at the local supermarket and/or coop. Since much of what I get is pretty mundane, places like Harris Teeter will include many of the veggies in my box, but Roots, David’s or The Common Market will be more likely sources for tatsoi, mizuna, sunchokes, garlic scapes, and the other more exotic veggies. I may use Breezy Willow’s pricing as well, since I go to the Glenwood market most weeks.

Last year’s summary tables tell me I got 124 different items over the course of the 25 weeks. That could be difficult to track, but I am trying. Here is a list of a typical delivery from our summer CSA last year, from September.

This CSA cost us $30/week, and every week there were 10-14 items in the box. The week above yielded 13 items. Therefore, doing the math, buying 13 organic items that averaged $2.33 each would show you the value of this particular season in the CSA. Some years may not be as productive, depending on the weather. 2011 was a very good year for Lancaster Farm Fresh Coop, the parent non-profit supplying Sandy Spring CSA.

Twelve items this week. $2.50 per item average. Again, all organic including the cantaloupe. Two pints of heirloom cherry tomatoes counts as one item. Where could you find a pint of heirlooms for $1.25? A dozen ears of organic sweet corn. At least $4 a dozen, I recall from seeing it at Roots last year, and thinking what a bargain we were getting.

As for the volume of produce here, thankfully every week included an herb, which lasted in the veggie drawer for many weeks, allowing me to use fresh herbs for most of my cooking. We did end up freezing tomatoes and canning pickles from cucumbers.

I even canned “dilly beans”. For a vegetarian or a less meatarian, having fresh produce of this quality will easily feed a couple for most meals a week. We used all the greens and lettuces in salads for lunches. The hardest thing to use up, for us, were the eggplants and squashes. Lots of ratatouille, eggplant parm, lasagna, and I started making chocolate zucchini bread to take to the conservancy.

Building Relationships with Local Businesses

An Appropriate Post for Mom and Pop Business Owners Day!

Where do you buy things? Foods. Hardware. Plants.

How about services? Plumbing. Car care. Roof. Painting. Landscaping.

There was a time when we were young that we did many things ourselves. Eventually work, and work travel, plus long commutes got in the way. We became time constrained. We needed to find people to help us maintain our home and our things, like appliances and cars.

Over the thirty plus years in Howard County, we established long term relationships with service providers and with local businesses in and around the county. Buy Local means something to us. We avoid nationwide mega centers and big box stores if there are viable alternative sources that keep more money here in Howard County. The Costco runs are only three or four times a year for things not easily bought at local businesses, like printer cartridges, computer paper, and for things like stock pantry items. If I can get what I need locally, I will.

Since 1983, British American has taken care of our cars. Since Brian’s daughters were really little, and when Brian and Rob did most of the work. Now Sandi is general manager, and Brian and Jennifer’s grandchildren cheer up the office when we see them there.

Ken Griffin does our plumbing. Has for years. When our well pump failed and we needed to replace 387 feet of wire as well, they were here in a day to get it all done. They live not far south of us, and work out of their home.

My husband has his yard equipment work done at Lawson’s in Woodbine. We get our tractor supplies from Maryland Equipment, also in Woodbine. We go to Kendall’s or Clark’s for almost all of our hardware needs. We were at Kendall’s Wednesday, after lunch at the Bridge, and a trip to the landfill to dump a truckload of pokeweed. Just the way it has become. Going to local places for food and services.

We buy annual and perennial flowers, plus many of the annuals in my herb garden at Sun Nursery. I could spend hours wandering around their nursery. My tulips, black eyed susans, cover plants and the rosemary and sage in my garden all came from there. Most of the basil each year as well.

Columbia Finishers is the painting company that did all our cedar replacement and staining. They do our difficult painting too. The type where you need scaffolding. There is no way we could do board replacement thirty feet in the air at our attic level.

We first met Craig, the owner, when they used to stain our town house community. They still have that contract, because their quality of work is excellent.

We used S&K Roofing to do our roof. They are just up the road in Eldersburg, and family owned. They did our roof between Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee last August and September. Scary having them show up when we had no power, but done before the week long rains descended upon us. Giving us peace of mind and a dry attic. Absolutely perfectly done.

As for this year, we contacted Rhine to help with spring cleanup since I can do no work until recovery from surgery. I always helped my husband with mulching, pruning, and general clean up after winter took its toll on the property. Kept me in better shape than I was when still working at my desk before retiring.

They did not disappoint. Jay is a joy to work with. We are indeed fortunate to have so many quality family owned businesses here in Howard County and nearby.

I know I am a locavore when it comes to finding food and wine in the area, but I also am committed to supporting family operations to do as much as we can no longer do by ourselves. It only makes sense to me to be a part of my community in more ways than I did while working, and spending most of my time commuting to DC.

Buy Local. That’s my motto. It certainly has served us well.

St. Patty’s Day Gifts

We got lots of gifts today. Perfect weather.

Crock pot corned beef and cabbage.

Mojitos on the patio (hey, they’re green, aren’t they?)

and a spring clean up without lifting a finger.

When we knew I was having surgery, for the first time in seven years, my husband hired a local family owned business to do our spring clean up. I can’t lift or carry, and he was on his own doing things inside and outside our home.

We usually do all our yard work ourselves. I find it relaxing to putter around in my flower beds and spread mulch. I couldn’t do anything this year, so we bit the bullet and hired Rhine, a local west county family in the landscaping business.

Four really good guys came in, removed shrubs, edged all the beds on the property, cleaned it all up, and will be back tomorrow to mulch, with 40 cubic yards of mulch. That’s what it takes to do our entire property.

The fun part for me now is replacing all we took out. I get to choose my shrubs, bushes, ornamental trees and flowers. It was all cleared up and dug up, including a few massive stumps from dead trees we cut down after two years of blizzards.

A clean slate. And, a few froggies in my pond.

I still like to do things myself around here, but it is nice to have locally owned family businesses to turn to when you do need help. This was such a large job, and I can relax and know my husband isn’t pushing himself to the limit doing it all himself.

Now, when it comes to my garden, ain’t nobody touching it but me.

A Freezer Full of Local Meat

Want to avoid pink slime? How about dinner without antibiotics or hormones?

If you, like me, want to change the content of the meat that comes into your house, then go looking at the farmer’s markets and the local butchers.

Yes, the meat costs more. I solved that problem by putting less of it on our plates. More veggies, less meat. Same cost. Better for me health wise. The colcannon was the star of this meal, not the beef.

We are lucky here in Howard County to have at least four butchers, and a large number of local farmers selling meat from free range, grass fed, pastured animals.

With the butchers, you may not always know the source of the animal, but you can ask questions about what is in that package of ground meat. With the farmer’s markets, you can know even more about the source.

I just went digging in my freezer, doing a spring clean out. It is pretty deep in there.

I also have the benefit of a weekly meat delivery from the winter CSA. This half turkey, free range, from the Zahradka Farm, is sitting in the freezer waiting for me to brine it, smoke it, and make at least a half dozen meals from it. Then, use the leftover bones to make broth.

Butchers around here include: Wagner’s in Mt. Airy, Boarman’s in Highland, Treuth in Oella, and Laurel Meat Market. I have bought from all but Laurel. HowChow can fill you in on them.

Local sources include: Clark, TLV, Wagon Wheel, and at Breezy Willow, they sell locally raised meats. So does South Mountain Creamery when they come to the farmer’s markets, or if you have home delivery of their dairy products.

A Day at the Conservancy

Today I finally had a day out and about all by myself, without just riding around being chauffeured by my husband and not being able to do much. I went to the Conservancy to be one of the hike leaders for the Howard Legacy Leadership Institute on the Environment (HoLLIE) class finishing their course work and beginning their internships across the county non-profits.

I graduated from HoLLIE and volunteered at the Conservancy, working on planning programs like the one tomorrow night with Tony Geraci talking about healthy lunches for school aged children. The time I spent working with the committee to bring new and interesting programs to the site has been satisfying to me. I have met so many wonderful people, who along with me give freely of their precious time on educational programs, field trips, and much more. The Gudelsky Center is the location for the artwork, and the nature center is in the basement.

We went to visit Ranger, our rescued barred owl who was out last night visiting a County library, I hear.

The bee hives, where Howard County Beekeepers harvest the honey that they sell and give part of the proceeds to the Conservancy, and I buy to use in my cooking.

Today what made it even more fun was the opening of the art exhibit for the juried art show. The exhibit goes through April 19th, when the silent auction takes place. I already have my eye on an amazing piece made of porcelain. There’s also a whimsical one made with marbles. I will be writing about the art show later, once I take a few pics in better light than noon today.

While out and about on the trails, we searched for and found skunk cabbage opening up, along the east branch near the north end of the property. Always a sure sign of spring. A beautiful day, with temps far above what they should be in March.

Tomorrow is a full day there. I will be there for a history walk with the volunteers at 8:30. There is elementary school training for volunteer naturalists at 9:30, and Tony Geraci’s program at 7 PM.

Sometimes I do wonder how I ever found time to work.

The Sounds of Spring

We seem to concentrate on what spring looks like and forget to mention its effect on our other senses, like hearing.

This past week the red winged blackbirds returned to my feeders, with their short sharp calls. As I wake in the morning, the songs of all the birds in the trees are much louder and more varied than in the winter as more returning birds take up residence on the property line. You really know the season has changed for good when the hummingbirds return, and when they become so accustomed to you, they feed right next to you and you can hear their wings.

Plus, with the windows open, you hear them waking you up in the morning instead of the alarm. The catbirds and sparrows return in force. Babies are everywhere. They peep incessantly. They then start to venture out into the grass, and you can always find them running around, peeping and if you get too close, you risk a protective mama making noise and chasing them. This one ventured through the parking pad to the tall grass.

With that open window, I also get serenaded by my neighbor’s lone rooster living among their hens. He crows all the time, but closed homes in the winter don’t allow you to hear him.

The cows on the farm over the hill from us are heard as well. They are venturing farther out in the fields closer to us and the sound carries over to our front yard.

The distant highway traffic noise is still audible, but will fade once the trees get their leaves. Only in winter do you really know there is a highway not far from us. The summer cocoon of forest shields that sound for more than half the year. It is louder these days because so many trees were damaged or fell during the blizzards and the hurricane. I noticed it this winter as some of our buffer is gone.

Last night the first real sounds of spring, my next door neighbor fired up the tractor and took it for a spin, knowing that with this mild weather and week of temps in the 70s, we will be cutting grass sooner than ever. Spring has really arrived the first time you hear John Deere and Kubota motors (the tractors of choice in the immediate vicinity).

And the bunnies and squirrels have babies, which means hunting season begins for the foxes. Have you heard bunnies or squirrels? Do you know what kind of sounds they make? We now do, because of living in close proximity to both.

The first time I hear that screaming of a bunny being pursued or caught by a fox means the circle of life continues just outside our door. We have watched that drama unfold beneath our bedroom window, actually observing three rabbits below trying to lure a fox from their hidden nests and scattering in all directions followed by the sight of the fox chasing them into the brush. I never found any evidence of a kill, but I know rabbits will scream when injured or frightened. The three that scattered were not injured and ran, I believe to draw the fox away.

Life in the country. Different. Worth it.

Howard County Farmer’s Markets Launched A New Web Site

Today while I was out visiting TLV Tree Farm, Jen mentioned that recently a dedicated web site was launched that will include information about the Howard County Farmer’s Markets, which begin their season in May.

I think we are fortunate to have a market somewhere in the county five days out of the week. Some of the vendors come to the market in more than one of the locations, and some are unique. I hope this year that there are even more vendors as I have watched Glenwood grow from 5 or 6 vendors to last year’s ten. That’s a respectable number for one community site. I also found it to become a meeting place, where a number of us met there so many times, we were discussing recipes and favorite flavors of South Mountain’s ice cream.

Previously, I used to go to HCEDA to look for market info. I am hoping that this web site gives us up to the minute information on what is available, and on the individual vendors. I was always impressed with how some other counties had dedicated web sites.

It also seems to me that there is a younger generation of farmers out there. Last year I purchased veggies from Love Dove Farm at the hospital market. They are new and growing. Bowling Green Farm is the only dairy left in Howard County, and I love their cheese spreads. They come to the Friday market at the hospital, and I buy there or go out to TLV or Breezy Willow, who also sell Bowling Green Farm cheeses. Their web site states that they now are producing butter.

I noted on the web site that the Ellicott City Wednesday market is moving to the new Miller Library this year.

Support a local farmer. Put the county farmer’s markets on your weekly shopping schedule.

West County – Lunch in Lisbon at the Grill

Today we headed out for a short trip to accomplish three things. Pick up cheese and meat from TLV, check out chicken coops at Myers MiniBarns, and have lunch at the Town Grill.

OK, we lived here seven years. Never stopped at the Grill. It is always crowded when we drive past, but today we decided to brave the rush and get pulled pork. This place smells so good when you drive up.

This would be why. Smoking the meats right in the lot in front of the Grill. All sorts of good stuff including salmon and trout for the fish lovers among us. Definitely small inside, but you can get a place to sit if you wait a few minutes. People are coming and going constantly and it is a mix of locals, bike riders, workers, passers by, and people who just love pit beef.

I did not want to be as geeky as I usually am, and take pics of the food, but I had a BBQ sundae, which is cornbread topped with pulled pork, cole slaw and a deep fried pickle. My hubby had a pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato fries. They did not disappoint as the smoky intensity is what makes their pulled pork so good. And, it is chunky, not all mushy like some BBQ sandwiches are.

Definitely we will be coming back, maybe even for an occasional Thursday night dinner. They just recently started these.

It puts a whole new meaning on the term Gas and Go. Now, as we also love R&R Taqueria we are becoming gas station food afficianados. Not a bad thing, by any means.

As for the rest of our trip, we got a brochure and an idea of what the Taj Mahal of chicken coops cost. Trying to decide if we get chickens in the next year, do we build our own coop and spend a fortune on materials, etc. or buy a ready made chicken tractor.

Dreaming and planning. That’s what makes it fun out here. And, yes, we got to TLV for kielbasa and a promise to have a brisket saved when they next butcher a steer, and some Bowling Green Cheese. All in all, a good Saturday morning.

West County Hidden Treasures – Glenwood

I am not sure when I first went into Casual Gourmet. I think it was when I was looking for a wedding shower gift and happened to notice a new store just down from the Glenwood Farmer’s Market by the library. It was before Hillmuth moved in, and now of course the Pasta Blitz franchise, Vittorio’s is out there. HowChow blogged about it, and there is a favorable report on their pizza in his comments.

Casual Gourmet was one of the earlier tenants there in the strip mall.

I stop there for a latte on the way to the Glenwood Farmer’s Market, and I have bought a locally sourced pepper jelly assortment from them. Suzanne’s Pepper Jelly Heaven, Purgatory and Hell. Suzanne is a local from Glenwood, and her home business has blossomed big time. Her web site says she now makes a Pepper Jelly Ghost, labeled scary hot, and with a warning tag. Who is brave enough to try it and let me know if they live?

We bought a little sampler a while back, used it everywhere except we can’t handle Hell. Need to tone it down, but we picked up some recipes from the shelf while we were there.

They also have a fill tank for their Ariston Italian Olive Oil, a really nice oil I use to drizzle on my heirlooms in the summer.

Hard to find kitchen utensils, like my ravioli skimmer. I have used this for the past few years on the rare occasions that I do break out the pasta maker, and it also does a good job with other small pastas.

Go in, browse around, check out their huge selection of sauces and marinades and, if you live in West County and need a specialty basket put together for a gift, they do it. Haven’t tried their lunch foods yet, but they are in that business too.

A Quick Trip Out to Mt. Airy for Ham Hocks and Soup Bones

You know you’re deeply ingrained into living in West HoCo, when you spend more time in Tractor Supply Co. than you do in Home Depot. Actually, you rarely do Home Depot. If TSC doesn’t have what you need, you are shopping at Clark’s or Kendall, supporting local businesses.

Today we needed stuff (or my better half did) for his tractor maintenance, and to clean up a few things on the snow thrower before putting it away. I wanted to visit Wagner’s Meats to get soup bones and ham hocks. I have some anasazi beans soaking to make soup in the crockpot overnight. I am getting into good enough shape to soak beans. If we get a crockpot soup done, it will be three of four meals worth.

Wagner’s processes meats for local farmers and sells also from a storefront. Yes, you can get a side of beef here, but you can also come in and just buy a pound of whatever you need. Soup bones are 89 cents a pound. Ham hocks were big and meaty and smell really wonderful right now as I am typing and they are cooking away.

This is my first visit to Wagner’s as I usually run down to Boarman’s but I can’t drive for a while, and the last time I hit Boarman’s, they were out of beef bones for making stock. I got four pounds today, safely stashed in the freezer until I have the time and am allowed to cut up all those veggies to add to make beef stock. Nothing like homemade stock to make soup.

While out there, we checked out the location of Cartercue, the BBQ joint out on Main St. It wasn’t open or we would have picked up some carryout to bring home for dinner tonight. Turns out the temporary cook aka my husband will be heating up leftover soup from the other night’s dinner.

I can’t wait to be cleared to eat real food again. This soft diet is driving me nuts. I must be healing. I am hungry.

Mt. Airy has the distinction of being in four counties in MD so you find yourself seeing county entrance signs almost every time you cross a creek. Since I enjoyed being outside on a great day, we came home on back roads south of the interstate, roads like Long Corner and Florence. Really west county out here. Yes, this is a named road, and not someone’s driveway.

If you don’t live in west county but want to see some incredibly beautiful parts of Howard County, take your GPS and put in a destination avoiding highways and taking the shortest distance instead of fastest time. We were heading south on Rte 27 when we input “go home” and it took us on roads like Gue, which is the road above in the picture. Never been on this one before.

Oh, and you definitely know you have changed how you live when many of your shoes come from Tractor Supply. Ariat I buy them when they go on sale.
