Hurry Up and Wait

Posted on

After the first month with no kitchen, we are in that excruciating period of little things and inspections. Lots of one and two day tasks.

This is pretty much what we are experiencing every day since they gutted the room.

We get to wander through the area when no one is working. Otherwise, we have the dining room, foyer, family room and mud room sealed off. We either have to go outside to get from front of house to mud room, where the temporary kitchen is located, or come down the spiral staircase from the bonus room above the garage.

We have cleared four rough in inspections and are ready for the new foam insulation to be applied. Then, dry wall begins next week. Followed by priming and painting.

Here’s a short tour of my temporary kitchen/laundry room.

It has a lovely view of the dumpster and the portapot. My smart oven and coffee pot share the folding table. All of the overheads have dishes and baking supplies in them, The two drawers are silverware, utensils and storage bags. The crockpot is in the lower cabinet with the laundry and dish soaps.

Looking to the washer/dryer.

The induction burner lives on top of the dryer. It has to be plugged in there because the other side can’t handle the burner and the oven. The microwave lives in the garage because it’s another power hog. My pantry is in the garage, too. Large critter proof storage bins on shelves out there.

We wash everything in the utility sink and air dry it all on top of the washing machine. If I need to do laundry, it gets interesting. Not shown behind the door to the left of the sink are the shelves holding my pans, the containers and colanders and whatever else I need to cook. Life becomes complicated when you are limited to one burner, one small oven and a microwave.

But I did do a pretty good job with Friday night’s dinner. Shrimp in the oven. Couscous on the stove. The red sauce in the microwave.

Eight more weeks. I hope I am still motivated to keep cooking and not bailing to local restaurants. It has been a challenge.
